Why choose A-Level Desing Technology: Product Design (textiles)?

The specification has been designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design and technology, to develop their capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. There are opportunities for candidates to work with a range of fabrics and components, used in the making of both two and three dimensional textile products, throughout the two year course. They will also gain an understanding of industrial and commercial practices within the area of design and manufacture.

It is helpful but not necessary for candidates to have studied GCSE Design and Technology before starting work on this course.

  • Learning styles: Practical skill sessions, visuals, DVD films, demonstrations, independent work.
  • Compatibility with Art.
  • Careers: Fashion designer, Textile design & manufacture, Buyers for textile products, Teaching and general design based industries.
  • Skills: Researching, sketching, modelling, making final product from fabrics including modern and smart materials.

Course Outline

Exam board: AQA – 2 units per year (Each unit is worth 25% of total A level marks)

Assessment Format:

At AS : One 2 hour written exam (50%)
One piece of coursework, approx 50 hours (50%)

At A2: One 2 hour written exam (50%)
One piece of coursework, approx 60 hours (50%)

Resources and facilities

Textbooks, library books & DVDs.

A dedicated textile room with all the machines and materials required, including CAD/CAM facilities.

Entry requirements

Previous study in a relevant subject area, such as Textiles, Graphics or Product Design is advantageous but not essential.
